Gunmen believed to be hired assassins have shot and killed an Assistant Inspector General of Police (ASP), and severely injured other policemen in Kastina-Ala local government area of Benue State.
The police public relations officer, ASP Austine Ezeani who confirmed the death yesterday identified the deceased ASP as Mr. Baba Ibrahim and said the ugly incident occurred on Wednesday evening.
According Ezeani, the deceased, leader of the squad, alongside other policemen were deployed from Abuja to Benue State on special assignment to investigate the prevalence of cattle rustling in the state.
The PPRO further explained that “the assassinated police officer was in a patrol vehicle at Katsina-Ala town, alongside three policemen, where they went to carry out the assignment when some gunmen who came in a Toyota corolla vehicle opened fire on them.”
Ezeani said the patrol vehicle lost control and that the deceased ASP died on the spot while the other three police personnel were badly injured. Their chances of survival is yet to be ascertained.
He stated that the injured policemen have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and insisted that the police command has commenced investigation into the matter to unravel those behind the heinous crime.
